Gansu Grotto Arts
Gansu Province lies in Northwest China and is crossed by the famous “Silk Road”. Through this ancient route, Chinese silk spread to the Western world and Buddhism and the arts of Duddhist sculpture and architecture were introduced to China. Over centuries, the Chinese art of Buddhist sculpture came into being. Grotto temples, such as the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang, Yulin Grottoes, East Thousand – Buddha Cave, Bingling Temple and Maijishan Grottoes, are scattered throughout the vast land of Gansu Province. They are not only the living proof of the hard work and wisdom of the ancient Chinese people but also ancient witnesses to the history of economic and cultural exchange between the Eastern and Western worlds.
