Lin Yutang
Lin Yutang (1895-1976)was born into a Christian family in Fujian Province, China. His father, an optimistic man, granted him a humorous personality; and from his second eldest sister, who died young,Lin Yutang gained a passion for learning. After graduating from university, Lin Yutang served as a professor at one of China’s most well-known institutes of learning, Tsinghua University. He went on to receive his Master of Arts from Harvard University in the United States, and his doctorate in linguistics from the University of Leipzig, Germany. After returning to China, Lin Yutang, a language master “with a firm grasp of both Chinese and Western cultures and a devotion to reviewing articles from around the world”, served as a professor at many famous universities of liberal arts. Lin Yutang wrote a great number of works in his life. He advocated inward-looking essays with a leisurely and comfortable style, and created theYusi-style essays featuring humorous and allegorical language. Hence, he was known as the “Master of Humor”.
