Dazu Rock Carving
The Dazu Rock Carving is a general term that refers to the carved statues and grottoes on the cliff in Dazu County, in the Southwest province of Chongqing. These cliff-side carvings are cultural and artistic treasures, integrating the essence of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism statue art. They are a reflection of everyday life in China from the late 9th century to the middle 13th century and feature life-like, distinct cultural characteristics. They are proof of the harmonious coexistence between Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism during this period. From different angles and points of view, the Dazu Rock Carving reflects the development and changes in rock-carving technique as well as religious beliefs through object imagery and written historical documents. Therefore, the Dazu Rock Carvings are representative of China’s grotto art of the late period, and are equal in popularity to the Yungang Grottoes, Longmen Grottoes and Mogao Grottoes. In 1999, the Dazu Rock Carvings were included on the World Heritage List.
