The Art of Chinese Xinjiang Uygur Muqam
The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, located in Northwest China, is a pivotal area on the ancient Silk Road. It used to be theplace where Eastern and Western civilizations exchanged and converged, and therefore, the unique “Ancient Culture of Western Regions” came to be. The magnificent classic series “Mukamu” (Muqam), which integrate songs, dances and music,have become the main art from for the people to express their feelings and aspirations handed down over the ages. The features of large-scale coverage,rigorous composition, complex rhythm and beats as well as plentiful tune changes of Mukamu are rarely seen in other countries in the world. In 2005, Xinjiang Uygur Mukamu Art of China was named one of the “Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” by UNESCO.
