Mainstream Broadcasting Corporation is a British Columbia media company owned and operated by local Vancouver resident and businessman, James Ho. Mainstream began its broadcasting service in 1973 as Overseas Chinese Voice (OCV). In 1993, OCV programming was incorporated into the multicultural AM radio station of CHMB AM1320, serving the needs of Vancouver’s multicultural community.
In addition to meeting the demand of the Chinese-speaking community, CHMB is also providing service to the growing diverse Vancouver community in 12 other languages including Portuguese, Brazilian, Filipino, Greek, Japanese, Tamil, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Danish, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish. Every effort is made at the station to ensure its programming reflects the diverse cultures and core values of Vancouver’s ethnic communities, fairly and accurately.
During the year of 2001, Mr. Ho, owner of Mainstream Broadcasting Corp, CHMB AM1320, leaded a group of well-known local investors to apply to the CRTC for a licence to operate the last over-the-air TV service in Vancouver . In a very competitive process, Mr. Ho's group was successful. The CRTC granted the licence to this group on Feb. 2002. The new television station, called Channel M (CHNM), was established and then officially launched on the 27th of June 2003.
Channel M was an over-the-air television station broadcasting to three million Vancouver extended market viewers on cable channel 8, Express Vu channel 254 and on Vancouver Island/Sunshine Coast on cable channel 10. The locally-owned station features newscasts in Cantonese, Mandarin and Punjabi, as well as public affairs, lifestyles and entertainment programming in more than 20 different languages and 65 hours a week of top-rated English language programming. Channel M has built a highly successful and the first award winning free over-the-air multicultural television in Vancouver.
Approved by the CRTC in July, 2008, Channel M has been sold to Rogers on March 31, 2008.
獲獎與榮譽 / Awards and Honours
CHMB is pleased to be the winner of the British Columbia Online or Multi-platform Achievement Award presented by the 150 years in Golden Mountain Celebration Committee and the Victoria Chinese Commerce Association. The award is presented to individuals or businesses who have excelled in their field of endeavour benefiting the Chinese Canadian communities or Canadian society and CHMB is the only media outlet to receive the award. The award was presented to CHMB on August 8, 2008 in recognition of the 150 years of Chinese Canadian achievements and contributions to Canada.
In a highly competitive industry, a 2004 Comquest Research (subsidiary of BBM Canada) survey confirmed CHMB reaches 81% of Vancouver’s Chinese audience. Furthermore, according to the Radio Marketing Bureau in Ottawa, the Station ranks third of eight Vancouver area AM radio stations in terms of revenues. Such impressive statistics indicate that CHMB is not just a radio station, but also a strong media that can effectively promote services and products in the local community.
