Black Elves

The Francois’ langur belongs to the Cercopithecidae family in the Primate order. They are known as “leaf monkeys” because they prefer to eat young leaves. Today, there are only about 2,000 Francois’ langur in the world, living mainly in China, Vietnam and Laos. The Francois’ langur has been included on the United Nations’ Red List of Endangered Species. Most of the 1,200 Francois’ langur residing in China are located in the provinces of Guizhou and Guangxi. Langurs in this area used to live and multiply according to the natural law. However, with exposure to hunters and man, its population is growing smaller. At the same time, with an enhanced awareness of environment protection, the local people are trying to find a most efficient way of coexisting with these “black elves”.
