About Us

Mainstream Broadcasting Corporation is a British Columbia media company owned and operated by local Vancouver resident and businessman, James Ho. Mainstream began its broadcasting service in 1973 as Overseas Chinese Voice (OCV). In 1993, OCV programming was incorporated into the multicultural AM radio station of CHMB AM1320, serving the needs of Vancouver¡¯s multicultural community. In addition to meeting the demand of the Chinese-speaking community, CHMB is also providing service to the growing diverse Vancouver community in 12 other languages including Portuguese, Brazilian, Filipino, Greek, Japanese, Tamil, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Danish, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish.

CHMB is pleased to be the winner of the British Columbia Online or Multi-platform Achievement Award presented by the 150 years in Golden Mountain Celebration Committee and the Victoria Chinese Commerce Association. The award is presented to individuals or businesses who have excelled in their field of endeavour benefiting the Chinese Canadian communities or Canadian society and CHMB is the only media outlet to receive the award. The award was presented to CHMB on August 8, 2008 in recognition of the 150 years of Chinese Canadian achievements and contributions to Canada.

As British Columbia celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2008, CHMB is also celebrating its 35th anniversary. CHMB has served the multicultural communities of British Columbia for over three decades with much pride and dedication. All these years, CHMB has delivered to the communities with a variety of superb news, current affairs, as well as informative, educational and entertaining programming.

In a highly competitive industry, a 2004 Comquest Research (subsidiary of BBM Canada) survey confirmed CHMB now reaches 81% of Vancouver¡¯s Chinese audience. Furthermore, according to the Radio Marketing Bureau in Ottawa, the Station ranks third of eight Vancouver area AM radio stations in terms of revenues. Such impressive statistics indicate that CHMB is not just a radio station, but also a strong media that can effectively promote services and products in the local community.

In terms of local service, CHMB supports a wide variety of community, non-profit and charitable organizations in its fundraising efforts and promotional activities. Examples of these activities include the following:

  • The leadership role played in helping to raise $3 million in 1999 to aid victims affected by Taiwan¡¯s worst earthquake in over 200 years.

  • In 2002, CHMB raised $10,000 in three weeks for an RCMP fund for fallen officers.

  • Following the catastrophic Tsunami in Southeast Asia in which millions of population were devastated, CHMB appealed its listeners for donation to the ¡°Canadian Red Cross ¨C S E Asia Earthquake & Tidal Wave Relief Fund" and raised more than $210,000 from 28 December 2004 to 11 January 2005.

  • A day after earthquake, measuring 8 on the Richter scale in Sichuan Province, China, on May 12, 2008, CHMB was the first media outlet to take immediate action. On May 13, CHMB launched a fundraising campaign, including a radiothon and a charity concert, in helping the earthquake victims.  In approximately a month, AM1320 CERF, the fund set up by CHMB, has raised over 1.1 million Canadian dollars.  All money raised have been donated to Tzu Chi Foundation Canada.  Tzu Chi is a charitable organization recognized by the Chinese and Canadian governments and is involved in the Sichuan rescue efforts.  The organization carries no administrative expenses.

Along with this kind of community involvement, CHMB works continually to meet the needs of Vancouver¡¯s expanding multicultural community by helping those of different cultural backgrounds understand each other, and integrate successfully into the mainstream of Canadian society.

Another aspect of local service in which CHMB takes pride is the quality of its local ethnic news reporting. Every effort is made at the station to ensure its programming reflects the diverse cultures and core values of Vancouver¡¯s ethnic communities, fairly and accurately.

Mainstream Broadcasting Corporation has developed into a media group with the founding of ITM International Top Model Corporation in 2005 and the launch of the Western Edition of Chinese Canadian Times ( CC Times) in February 2007.
